Paperless Parts Announces Beta Launch of New Functionality Designed to Accelerate Quoting Complex Assemblies from Prints

New BOM Builder reduces the time it takes to build complex Bills of Materials from PDFs by up to 90%.

October 15, 2024

Boston, MA and Orlando, FL — Today at FABTECH in Orlando, Paperless Parts, the leading quoting and collaboration platform for custom part manufacturers, announced that it is now accepting customers into a Private Beta for its new BOM Builder, a feature designed to empower estimators to quote complex assemblies faster with less risk.

One of the most tedious steps in the quoting process is translating the engineering bill of materials (eBOM) that a buyer provides into a manufacturing BOM (mBOM), which describes the steps a manufacturer will need to take to produce a part. This process is time-consuming no matter which quoting system a shop uses, but it is especially manual and error-prone if the RFQ package does not contain a model. Whether shops are using spreadsheets or their ERP systems to quote an assembly, setting up the BOM can take hours or days to complete—time shops can ill afford when looking to turn quotes around fast.

“One of the things customers have always loved most about Paperless Parts is that we have the ability to take a model, automatically extract the BOM, and push that directly into an ERP when a job is won,” explains Paperless Parts founder & CEO Jason Ray. “But in reality, many of our customers still don’t get models with their RFQ packages and are forced to manually build out complicated BOMs from prints. With Paperless Parts’ new BOM Builder, a process that normally takes countless hours and hundreds—if not thousands—of clicks and keystrokes can now be accomplished in a fraction of the time. Early beta customers have experienced up to a 90% reduction in the time it takes to build out BOMs from prints.”

Key features include:

● Spreadsheet-like interface: Quickly build large, complex BOMs from prints and spreadsheets. Enter part data by typing or pasting into rows, and easily review nested subassemblies to ensure nothing is missed, such as component-level files, when setting up the BOM structure.

● Flexible BOM building: Unlike in an ERP system, the BOM Builder allows users to build the BOM in any order that works best without restrictions, whether it’s pasting entire spreadsheets or building subassemblies from multi-page prints.

● Risk-free BOM editing: The “undo” option in the BOM Builder makes it easy to fix mistakes, and auto-saving ensures no progress is lost if a user steps away.

● Drag-and-drop functionality: Drag files to components, add parts to subassemblies, and rearrange components by dragging them to the correct place in the BOM.

● Bulk assign purchased components: Instantly associate hardware with records in the purchased component library to retrieve real-time pricing.

● ERP integration: Push the BOM directly to your ERP system when a PO is received, eliminating the need to rebuild it.

“Complex assembly work is lucrative but difficult to quote; estimators need to define how each part fits together by creating a detailed BOM, which can take hours, sometimes days, to complete—especially if they do not have a perfect 3D CAD file,” said Jason Luce, Chief Technology Officer of Paperless Parts. “The BOM Builder helps estimators save time and stay organized when setting up lengthy and intricate BOMs. At the end of the day, it empowers shops to take on more of those complex jobs without slowing down the business.”

Select existing customers that meet specific criteria are eligible for early access to BOM Builder through our closed Beta program. To inquire about your shop’s eligibility, please contact [email protected].
